Hiking
Kuniga Coast Track
This hiking track is the best way to explore and enjoy the dynamic island. Follow the well-marked trail from atop the 257m high eroded Matengai Cliff, one of the most spectacular sea cliffs in Japan, down to the impressive Tsūtenkyō Arch, Kuniga Beach and Kuniga Shrine. Horses and cows graze on the spacious grassland here also. You can also start at the bottom of the track (where the local bus stops) and walk up to Matengai Cliff. Your return trip can be along the same track or along the road through the farmland.

Mt. Takuhi Track
There are two tracks you can choose from on Mt. Takuhi – to the shrine or to the summit.
- Shrine Track
- The wooden shrine building of Takuhi Shrine is the oldest in the Oki Islands (1732). This shrine is dedicated to the deity of safe sea voyages. The short 15 minute hike up to the shrine is very enjoyable. Observe interesting flora and fauna and enjoy the views out across the inner sea.
- Summit Track
- Observe interesting flora and fauna, enjoy the views out across the inner sea and listen to birds as you climb to the top of Mt. Takuhi (452m). This is a relatively easy one hour climb. From the summit you can see out across the Oki Islands and to the mainland. You can visit the shrine on your way back down.
- Important Information
- *Please be aware that there may be Japanese diamond viper (mamushi) in the forest or on the trail. Do not go close to or touch these snakes as they are extremely venomous.
*There are no shops or restaurants nearby, so make sure you take food and drink with you.
*There is no toilet on the track, but the priest has given permission for hikers to use the toilet inside the shrine office (large white building in front of the shrine). Please leave the toilet in a clean state for other shrine worshippers and hikers.
